Their children and friends are interesting characters. I’ve always loved Maeve Binchy’s epic tales of Irish friendship, and dip in every so often. There are some decent men, but it is firevly noticeable that there are more bad men than good.

The writing is not typical Binchy to me.
The novel spans about 4 years starting from the time Patrick O’Neill from the U. Things change for the family and village when American Patrick O’Neil decides to build a hotel in Mountfern. Binchy is the forerunner of such authors as Sheila O’Flanagan, Patricia Scanlan and Marian Keyes – showcasing Irish life with gentle humour and understanding.
Firefly Summer tells the story of the sleepy town of Mountfern, as an American, Patrick O’Brian, comes home to find his roots and build a huge hotel on the ruined location of the old house. She sees some good in everyone. She makes us feel as if we also know the place and the people The characters are believable, complex and unique. Firef,y agree with some of the reviews that said too much happened at the end.
